Introduction:
Ethanol (also called ethyl alcohol, grain alcohol, drinking alcohol, spirits, or simply alcohol) is an organic chemical compound. It is a simple alcohol with the chemical formula C2H6O. Its formula can be also written as CH3−CH2−OH or C2H5OH (an ethyl group linked to a hydroxyl group), and is often abbreviated as EtOH. Ethanol is a volatile, flammable, colorless liquid with a slight characteristic odor. It is a psychoactive substance, recreational drug, and the active ingredient in alcoholic drinks.
ETOH is a term that is used to refer to ethanol alcohol. Ethanol alcohol, also called ethyl alcohol, grain alcohol, or just alcohol, is a member of a class of different organic compounds under the name alcohol. Ethanol is used as a solvent, in the production of other chemicals, or as an additive to gasoline.

Uses:
  • Ethanol fireplaces can be used for home heating or for decoration
  • Ethanol was commonly used as fuel in early bipropellant rocket (liquid-propelled) vehicles, in conjunction with an oxidizer such as liquid oxygen. The German A-4 ballistic rocket, better known by its propaganda name V-2 rocket of World War II
  • Ethanol is an important industrial ingredient. It has widespread use as a precursor for other organic compounds such as ethyl halides, ethyl esters, diethyl ether, acetic acid, and ethyl amines. Because of its low freezing point -173.20°F (−114.14 °C) and low toxicity, ethanol is sometimes used in laboratories (with dry ice or other coolants) as a cooling bath to keep vessels at temperatures below the freezing point of water. For the same reason, it is also used as the active fluid in alcohol thermometers.
  • Commercial fuel cells operate on reformed natural gas, hydrogen or methanol. Ethanol is an attractive alternative due to its wide availability, low cost, high purity and low toxicity. There are a wide range of fuel cell concepts that have entered trials including direct-ethanol fuel cells, auto-thermal reforming systems and thermally integrated systems. The majority of work is being conducted at a research level although there are a number of organizations at the beginning of commercialization of ethanol fuel cells.

Use Classification:
  • EPA Safer Chemical Functional Use Classes -Antimicrobial Actives,Solvents
  • Safer Chemical Classes - Green circle - The chemical has been verified to be of low concern
  • Food additives - Flavoring Agents
  • Human Drugs - EU pediatric investigation plans

Accidental Release Measures:

  • Isolation and Evacuation
  • As an immediate precautionary measure, isolate spill or leak area for at least 50 meters (150 feet) in all directions.
  • Large Spill: Consider initial downwind evacuation for at least 300 meters (1000 feet).
  • Fire: If tank, rail car or tank truck is involved in a fire, Isolate for 800 meters (1/2 mile) in all directions, also consider initial evacuation for 800 meters (1/2 mile) in all directions
  • Remove all ignition sources.
  • Ventilation.
  • Do not wash away into sewer.
  • Collect leaking and spilled liquid in covered containers as far as possible.
  • Absorb remaining liquid in inert absorbent.
  • Wash away remainder with plenty of water.
  • Store and dispose of according to local regulations.

Acetone, a colorless liquid also known as Propanone, is a solvent used in manufacture of plastics and other industrial products. Acetone may also be used to a limited extent in household products, including cosmetics and personal care products, where its most frequent application would be in the formulation of nail polish removers. Acetone occurs naturally in the human body as a byproduct of metabolism.

Plasticizers have different chemical compositions, they increase the elasticity and fluidity of the materials or products to which they are added while they are used to impart softness in the PVC industry. Plasticizers are used extensively in a variety of products used in our daily lives.

Some of the products to which these plasticizers are mixed include rubber belts, pencil rubbers, window films, table cloths, leather cloth, leather belts, leather footwear, perfumes, paints and emulsions, textile auxillaries, pressure sensitive adhesives, medical equipments, toys, non toxic lunch boxes, cable wires, vinyl flooring, printing inks, rubber components, explosives and rocket propellants, aircraft cables at high altitude and aircraft tubes.

Thus in today's world, plasticizers cater to a large segment of industries.

Product Descriptions:

Ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA), also known as poly (ethylene-vinyl acetate) (PEVA), is the copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate. The weight percent of vinyl acetate usually varies from 10 to 40%, with the remainder being ethylene. There are three different types of EVA copolymer, which differ in the vinyl acetate (VA) content and the way the materials are used.

The EVA copolymer which is based on a low proportion of VA (approximately up to 4%) may be referred to as vinyl acetate modified polyethylene. It is a copolymer and is processed as a thermoplastics material – just like low density polyethylene. It has some of the properties of a low density polyethylene but increased gloss (useful for film), softness and flexibility. The material is generally considered non-toxic.

The EVA copolymer, which is based on a medium proportion of VA (approximately 4 to 30%), is referred to as thermoplastic ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer and is a thermoplastic elastomer material. It is not vulcanized but has some of the properties of a rubber or of plasticized polyvinyl chloride particularly at the higher end of the range. Both filled and unfilled EVA materials have good low temperature properties and are tough. The materials with approximately 11% VA are used as hot melt adhesives.

This copolymer resin can be used in adhesives, sealants and coatings. It is the basis of many hot melt adhesives when blended with a petroleum wax and a resin tackifier. Also, it imparts plastic-like properties that enable wax to compete effectively with high-quality polymeric coatings.
