What is Powder Metallurgy
Powder metallurgy is a method of compacting metal parts from highly pure
metal powders compressed to the required shape in a precision die and
strengthened by the bonding of the adjacent surfaces of the powder particles
under heat and controlled atmosphere in a furnace. Additional features of
close tolerance, higher strength reduced porosity, higher densities can be
achieved by subsequest operations of sizing, coining, heat treatment and
steam treatment.
How Sintered Metal Parts are Made
In order to correctly determine suitable application, the various steps
required in fabrication of sintered parts must be well understood. Selection
of proper composition meeting all the specific requirements of the parts
must be considered. To maintain consistency and uniformity of initial run
and repeat orders the powder mix should be carefully blended to assure
proper size control.
Compacting
The blended powder in specified composition is carefully fed into the die
with controlled quantity of weight and compressed under desired pressure.
The compacted part now has the desired shape and smoothness of the final
part. The filling, compaction and ejection operations are generally carried
out on automated cycles and a fine balance between efficient production and
maximum precision is maintained.
Sintering
The compacted parts, which are still relatively fragile, are now passed
through a conveyer sintering furnace. In sintering the metal powders get
bonded to give the required strength. The sintering furnace is heated to a
precisely controlled elevated temperature and in suitable atmosphere.
Sizing
In some applications it is not possible to achieve the required
specifications by the basic operations of compaction and sintering. Such
parts are designed for a sizing operations of compaction and sintering. Such
parts are designed for a sizing operations. The parts are pressed in a
sizing die to control the parameters of either density, strength,
tolerances, finish or any combination of these.
Quality Control
All necessary inspection tools such as measuring instruments, analytical
balances, Shadow graphs, universal testing machines, hardness testers etc.
are provided. Specification for every part size are predetermined for each
stage of production and are strictly adhered to. Emphasis is on process
controlled quality.
Advantages of Sintered Metal Parts
Powder Metallurgy has unleashed many possibilities in designing and
manufacturing of metal parts. This results in a number of advantages over
other processes of manufacture.
- Low cost, high production and closer tolerances.
- Costly machining operations eliminated. Wherever necessary
relatively simple secondary operations are sufficient.
- Complete absence of material waste, low level of scrap.
- High degree of uniformity. Close tolerances throughout the batch.
- Flexibility in choice of compositions not possible by
conventional metallurgy, feasible even for non alloying metals.
- Special characteristics such as self lubrication, controlled
porosity for filters, good electrical and magnetic properties
achievable to desired levels.
- Heat treatment and steam treatment possible to achieve desired
levels of hardness, pore closure or rust prevention.
- Highly suitable for mass production from batch sizes of few
thousands to few millions.
